Biography
Rabbi Gershom Sizomu's journey represents one of the most compelling narratives in contemporary Judaism. Born and raised in Uganda, his path to rabbinic leadership began with a Bachelor of Arts in Education from Islamic University in Uganda—a foundation that would later inform his inclusive approach to religious leadership.
As a Be'chol Lashon Rabbinic Fellow at the Institute for Jewish & Community Research, Rabbi Sizomu came to the United States in 2003 to pursue rabbinical studies at the prestigious Ziegler School of Rabbinic Studies at American Jewish University in Los Angeles. His five-year journey culminated in 2008 with his ordination as a Conservative rabbi—a historic moment for African Judaism.
Upon returning to Uganda in July 2008, Rabbi Sizomu immediately demonstrated his commitment to expanding Jewish life in Africa by conducting a groundbreaking conversion ceremony for 250 people in the village of Nabogoya. This remarkable event drew participants from Uganda, Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa, establishing him as a central figure in African Jewish life.
Today, Rabbi Sizomu serves dual roles that exemplify his commitment to both spiritual and civic leadership. As Chief Rabbi of Uganda, he guides the Abayudaya Jewish community and supports Jewish life throughout East Africa. From February 2016 - 2021, he has also served as a Member of Parliament representing Bungokho North, making him one of the few rabbis worldwide to hold elected political office.
