Since opening in 2010, the Tobin Health Center has provided medical services to all community members in need. This has saved lives as the numbers below show community deaths caused from Malaria and Tuberculosis (TB) has been eradicated.

Tobin Health Centre
In 2011, the Tobin Health Centre was established in Mbale. Named in honor of Gary Tobin, a demographer and founder of the Institute for Jewish and Community Reseach, the center was a joint venture between the Abayudaya community and Be’chol Lashon, an organization co-founded by Tobin and his wife to celebrate Jewish diversity. Dr. Bwayo Denis is the medical director. The clinic provides primary care to the surrounding area. With a medical lab on site, it has had great success in combatting malaria and typhoid. Since the establishment of the clinic, deaths from those diseases has plunged.
Dr. Samson Wamani
In the mid-2010s, Dr. Samsom Wasmani because the first Abayudayan Jew to receive a medical degree, graduating from Busitema University. He has served as a doctor in Kampala and Mbale and has led many health initiatives ranging from treating COVID-19 and HIV to focusing on maternal and neo-natal health. He is a leader of Nasenyi Abayudaya Community.
Maternity Centre
In addition to primary care facility, the Shifra and Puah Maternity Center was launched in 2018 inside the the Tobin Centre (Shifra and Puah were the Hebrew handmaidens in the Book of Exodus who defined Pharoah’s command to kill the first born Hebrew boys.) The center provides comprehensive maternal health services including pre- and post-natal care as well childbirth assistance and ongoing educational support. Founded by the Israeli midwife Ilana Shemesh, it is staffed by a dedicated team of midwives supervised by a medical doctor. The Center also has an ultrasound machine and an incubator. The maternity clinic is open to the community.
