In the rolling hills of rural Uganda, members of the Abayudaya Jewish community begin their days before sunrise. Most are subsistence farmers, tending small plots of land that provide their families' sustenance. Many of their homes, modest structures of two or three rooms, stand without connection to the national power grid or running water systems. When clothes need washing or dishes require cleaning, community members make their way to nearby rivers, carrying the day's necessities on their backs.

Food insecurity represents the most significant challenge confronting sub-Saharan Jewish communities, with many families lacking access to basic infrastructure such as wells and water pumps. Yet within these challenges lies a story not of hardship alone, but of resilience, faith, and remarkable community strength.
Seeds of Hope
The Abayudaya community demonstrates what becomes possible when people combine deep faith with practical action. They have not waited for circumstances to improve; they have created institutions and systems that improve circumstances. Their synagogues feed bodies while nourishing souls. Their schools educate children while preserving cultural identity. Their agricultural programs honor traditional livelihoods while introducing innovations that can break cycles of food insecurity.
Self Sustainability
Under the leadership of Rabbi Gershom Sizomu, the Abayudaya community has developed institutions that address immediate needs while building long-term capacity. The schools provide education that extends beyond basic literacy to include vocational training and leadership development. At the Tobin Health Center, all community members receive medical treatment and maternal health services that would otherwise require traveling prohibitive distances.
